Philanthropy

The idea to establish a foundation began at a meeting in 1989 of North American Mitsubishi Electric executives, who believed that after 20 years of doing business in the U.S. it was time to give back to the community. Fifteen executives each contributed $100 toward the foundation, and that $1500 grew to a $15 million endowment through contributions of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan and its U.S. subsidiaries. The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation officially opened its doors in February 1991.

Mission Statement

The mission of the MEA Foundation is to contribute to a better world for us all by helping young people with disabilities, through technology, to maximize their potential and participation in society.

As a small foundation with a clearly defined mission, the MEA Foundation operates in the spirit of the Starfish parable. Working together with Mitsubishi Electric employee volunteers across the country, we believe we can make a difference, starfish by starfish.
